Calamity Mod

Major Overhaul tModLoader 1.4.4 — The largest and most popular content mod for Terraria.

Overview

The Calamity Mod is the most widely played content mod for Terraria, created by MountainDrew (Fabsol) and a large team of contributors. It transforms the base game into a substantially longer and more challenging experience by adding over 20 new bosses, five major biomes, the Rogue damage class, thousands of new items, and two post-Moon Lord difficulty modes that overhaul enemy AI and loot tables.

Calamity extends the Terraria endgame far beyond Moon Lord. Where vanilla Terraria ends, Calamity adds an entire post-Moon Lord progression arc with bosses like Providence, the Devourer of Gods, Yharon, the Exo Mechs, and Supreme Calamitas. Each boss tier introduces new ore, crafting materials, and class-specific weapon sets that keep progression feeling meaningful.

The mod also reworks many vanilla items, recipes, and balance decisions. It removes the vanilla Defense damage reduction formula and replaces it with its own system, rebalances accessories, and adds quality-of-life features like the Starter Bag (given on character creation) and permanent power-ups scattered throughout its new biomes.

Boss Progression

Calamity adds its own bosses throughout the entire Terraria progression. Below is the intended fight order, interleaved with vanilla bosses where applicable. Vanilla bosses are omitted for brevity — only Calamity-added bosses are listed.

Pre-Hardmode

  1. Desert Scourge — Summoned in the Desert biome. A worm boss and typically the first Calamity boss you fight. Drops Victide bars used for early armor and weapons.
  2. Crabulon — Summoned in the Glowing Mushroom biome. A large crab boss with mushroom-themed attacks. Drops equipment focused on the mushroom aesthetic.
  3. The Hive Mind (Corruption) / The Perforators (Crimson) — World-evil-specific bosses fought after the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu. The Hive Mind is a single large enemy; the Perforators are a trio of worm-like creatures spawned from a Perforator Cyst.
  4. The Slime God — A multi-phase fight involving two large slimes and a core. Fought after Skeletron. Drops Statigel armor, one of the best pre-Hardmode sets.

Hardmode (Pre-Plantera)

  1. Aquatic Scourge — Found in the Sulphurous Sea. A worm boss that drops materials for mid-Hardmode weapons. Can be fought shortly after Wall of Flesh.
  2. Brimstone Elemental — Summoned in the Brimstone Crag. A floating enemy with projectile-heavy attacks. Drops Brimstone-themed accessories and weapons.
  3. Calamitas Clone — A mage boss that summons the brothers Catastrophe and Cataclysm. Fought around the same tier as the Mechanical Bosses. Drops Essences of Chaos used in many recipes.
  4. Leviathan & Anahita — A dual boss fight triggered by killing Anahita in the Ocean biome. One of the more mechanically complex pre-Plantera fights.
  5. Astrum Aureus — A large mechanical boss found in the Astral Infection biome after defeating all three Mechanical Bosses. Drops Astral bars.

Hardmode (Post-Plantera)

  1. Plaguebringer Goliath — A bee-themed mechanical boss in the Jungle. Drops Plague Cell Canisters for crafting.
  2. Ravager — A fortress-like boss fought post-Plantera. Has multiple body parts that must be destroyed. Drops materials for powerful accessories.
  3. Astrum Deus — A massive dual worm boss in the Astral Infection. Fought post-Lunatic Cultist. Drops Stardust used for Astral equipment.

Post-Moon Lord

  1. Profaned Guardians — Three guardian bosses that serve as the gateway to post-Moon Lord content. Must be fought in the Hallow or Underworld during the day.
  2. The Dragonfolly — A chaotic bird-like boss that serves as a precursor to Yharon. Drops materials for mid-tier post-Moon Lord gear.
  3. Providence, the Profaned Goddess — A major milestone boss. Must be fought in the Hallow or Underworld during the day. Drops Divine Geodes and Unholy Essence used extensively in crafting. Night kills yield different drops.
  4. Ceaseless Void — A Sentinel of the Devourer. A stationary boss that spawns Dark Energy projectiles.
  5. Storm Weaver — A Sentinel of the Devourer. A fast worm boss fought in Space.
  6. Signus, Envoy of the Devourer — A Sentinel of the Devourer. A teleporting assassin-type boss.
  7. Polterghast — A ghost boss found in the Dungeon after defeating all three Sentinels. Has three phases with increasingly aggressive attacks.
  8. Old Duke — A fishron variant summoned by fishing in the Sulphurous Sea with a special bait. One of the hardest optional bosses.
  9. The Devourer of Gods — A massive worm boss that teleports across the screen. One of the most iconic Calamity fights. Drops Cosmilite bars for endgame armor.
  10. Yharon, Dragon of Rebirth — A dragon boss with two phases. Drops Yharon Soul Fragments and Auric Ore begins generating in the world.
  11. Exo Mechs — A triple mech fight against Ares, Thanatos, and Artemis & Apollo. You choose which to fight first, and all three must be defeated. Drops Exo Prisms.
  12. Supreme Calamitas — The final boss of the Calamity Mod. An extremely difficult bullet-hell fight with multiple phases, brother summons, and a brimstone arena. Drops Shadowspec bars, the ultimate crafting material.

New Biomes

Calamity adds five major biomes to world generation, each with unique enemies, loot, and atmosphere.

  • Sulphurous Sea — Replaces part of one Ocean biome. A toxic, acidic shoreline with poisonous enemies and the Aquatic Scourge boss. In Hardmode and beyond, it becomes increasingly dangerous and serves as the access point for the Abyss.
  • The Abyss — A massive vertical biome beneath the Sulphurous Sea, divided into four layers of increasing depth and difficulty. The deeper layers are pitch-dark and contain some of the most dangerous non-boss enemies in the mod. Unique weapons and accessories are found in Abyss chests at each layer. A light source and water-breathing equipment are essential.
  • Astral Infection — Spawns on the surface after defeating the Wall of Flesh (or can be seeded manually). A sci-fi themed biome with alien-looking terrain, cyan and magenta colors, and crystalline enemies. Contains Astral Ore after Astrum Aureus is defeated.
  • Brimstone Crag — Located in the Underworld, this is a charred sub-biome of fire and brimstone. Home to the Brimstone Elemental. Contains Charred Ore used for early Hardmode crafting.
  • Sunken Sea — An underwater cavern biome found beneath the Desert. A peaceful, aquatic area with Prism Shards and unique sea creatures. Contains the Desert Scourge summoning materials and useful early-game loot.

Rogue Class

Calamity introduces the Rogue class as a fully fledged fifth damage class alongside Melee, Ranged, Mage, and Summoner. Rogue weapons are thrown projectiles — knives, javelins, flasks, shurikens, and other throwables — that scale with Rogue damage bonuses.

The defining mechanic of the Rogue class is Stealth. While standing still or moving slowly, a stealth meter gradually fills. When stealth is full (or partially filled), the next Rogue weapon throw becomes a Stealth Strike, which has enhanced effects unique to each weapon. Stealth Strikes can deal dramatically more damage, pierce additional enemies, split into extra projectiles, or trigger special effects.

Rogue armor sets provide stealth generation speed, stealth strike damage bonuses, and Rogue damage increases. Key armor sets include Victide (pre-Hardmode), Statigel (pre-Hardmode), Hydrothermic (post-Plantera), Empyrean (post-Moon Lord), and Auric Tesla (endgame).

The class rewards a hit-and-move playstyle: position yourself safely, build stealth, unleash a powerful Stealth Strike, then reposition. This makes it particularly strong against bosses with predictable attack windows.

Difficulty Modes

Calamity adds two stacking difficulty modes on top of Terraria's existing Classic, Expert, and Master settings.

  • Revengeance Mode — Activated by using the Revengeance item dropped by the Wall of Flesh. This is the intended way to play Calamity in Expert Mode. It increases boss health and contact damage, adds new attack patterns to many bosses, introduces the Rage and Adrenaline mechanics (two meters that fill during boss fights and can be activated for burst damage), and improves boss loot tables with Revengeance-exclusive drops. Most Calamity balance and drop rates assume Revengeance Mode is active.
  • Death Mode — Toggled via an item in your inventory after enabling Revengeance. Dramatically increases difficulty by adding more projectiles to boss attacks, speeding up AI patterns, introducing environmental hazards (biome-specific temperature and water pressure), and further buffing enemy stats. Death Mode is designed for experienced players who have already completed a Revengeance playthrough.

The Rage meter fills when you are near enemies or narrowly dodge attacks. The Adrenaline meter fills continuously during a boss fight but resets to zero if you take damage. Both can be activated for a significant temporary damage boost, adding a skill-based risk-reward layer to every boss encounter.

Installation

Calamity runs on tModLoader, the official mod-loading framework for Terraria. To install:

  1. Install tModLoader from Steam (it is a free DLC for Terraria, or a standalone install).
  2. Launch tModLoader and open the Mod Browser from the main menu (Workshop > Download Mods).
  3. Search for "Calamity Mod (No Calamity Music)" and click Download. This is the main content mod.
  4. Optionally, also download "Calamity Mod Music" for the full custom soundtrack. The music mod is separate due to file size.
  5. Go to Workshop > Manage Mods, enable both mods, and click Reload Mods.
  6. Create a new character and world for the best experience — Calamity modifies world generation to include its new biomes.

Calamity requires tModLoader for Terraria 1.4.4. Make sure your tModLoader is up to date. The mod updates frequently, so check for updates before starting a new playthrough.

Tips for First Playthrough

  • Play on Expert + Revengeance Mode. Calamity is balanced around Revengeance. Classic and normal Expert Mode will feel undertuned, and you will miss out on Rage/Adrenaline mechanics and many exclusive drops.
  • Pick any class you enjoy. All five classes (including Rogue) are fully viable throughout the entire progression. Melee and Rogue are the most forgiving for new players. Summoner is strong but requires more game knowledge. Mage and Ranged offer high damage with less defense.
  • Create a Large world. Calamity adds several biomes that need room to generate properly. A Large world ensures the Abyss, Sulphurous Sea, and Sunken Sea all spawn at full size.
  • Install companion mods. These three mods pair extremely well with Calamity and are widely recommended:
    • Boss Checklist — Shows a sorted list of all bosses (vanilla and modded) in progression order, with indicators for which you have defeated. Essential for knowing what to fight next.
    • Recipe Browser — Lets you look up any item's crafting recipe and what it is used in. Invaluable when dealing with Calamity's thousands of new items and materials.
    • Magic Storage — Adds a centralized, searchable storage system. Calamity produces an enormous amount of materials and drops, and Magic Storage prevents your base from drowning in chests.
  • Do not skip the Abyss. Explore it at every tier of progression. Each layer unlocks as you get better light sources and water-breathing gear. The Abyss contains some of the strongest weapons and accessories at each stage of the game.
  • Build boss arenas. Calamity bosses are significantly more mobile and aggressive than vanilla bosses. Long, flat platforms with campfires, heart lanterns, and Brimstone torches (for Revengeance bonuses) make a real difference.
  • Check the Starter Bag. When you create a new character with Calamity installed, you receive a Starter Bag containing an Iron Heart (toggles Death Mode), the Revengeance item, and useful early materials. Do not ignore it.
